Daumier Charcoal Art

Today in CyberARTS we completed the assignment called Daumier Charcoal Art. This assignment required the class to work together in an attempt to recreate the piece of art called “Third Class Carriage”. Every student got a piece of the artwork (not knowing what it was) and had to draw and shade it. When everyone finished their piece of the painting we put all the puzzle pieces together and it created the work of art “Third Class Carriage”.

I personally think that this recreation of the art piece doesn’t show imitationalism very well.  Although the artist payed close attention to detail I still think it doesn’t show imitationalism well. The artist created flowing and soft lines through out the whole painting although a lot of lines in real life are sharp ad straight. Also the people in the artwork are not very life like. The are all outlined in a black line and none of them fit together and they all look choppy and disproportionate. So over all I don’t think this art piece showed imitationalism well.

I don’t think the artwork has unity. When looking at the whole picture everything looks very scrambled to much is going on in the picture. There are to many people squished in the small space of the art piece.  Also not all of the value matches up. For example the four squares in bottom right corner none of the values match up. Or the 4 squares in the top right corner again none of the values match up although they are supposed to be he same value.  All together I think the photo doesn’t show any unity.

The last thing I'm gonna talk about is how the piece of art work makes me feel. Over all this artwork makes me feel kind of sad. I feel sad looking at it because of many different elements of the photo. For example the way the faces of the people in the photo look like, they all seem very sad. Also the lines of the photo are very soft adding the look od sadness to the art piece. The value of the photo also give a depressing feel to the art piece. To sum up the painting makes me feel sad.
